Mental health is a top priority for the Department of Veterans Affairs. On April 19, 2012, Secretary of Veterans Affairs Erik Shinseki pledged 1,900 new mental health staffers to meet Veterans’ needs. In Amarillo and Lubbock, over the past eight years, 55 positions have been added to mental health programs. More and more Veterans are experiencing the increased availability and types of care. The Amarillo VA Health Care System began to offer Care Coordination Home Telehealth (CCHT) in 2008 to Veterans with conditions ranging from diabetes to post-traumatic stress disorder. That little machine has cut down hospital trips for the hundred-or-so Veterans that are part of the program. Now, the Amarillo VA has expanded by offering Clinical Video Telehealth (CVT). These real-time video monitors (which feature attachments like stethoscopes, otoscopes, and Doppler devices) allow Veterans to be seen by specialists miles and miles away from where they are standing.
